If you take a bird's-eye view of the shrub, you will notice that the clusters of needles atop the tiny stems resemble stars.
The needles are awl-shaped, unlike the long, slender needles with which many people are most familiar that grow on eastern white pine trees. A member of the cypress family, this shrub is a conifer. The female cones are berry-like, with one seed. This slow-growing plant is a dwarf, forming a compact mound that reaches just 1 to 3 feet in height at maturity. It tends to grow out rather than up. Along with certain types of wildflowers and native plants, this may be one of the lowest-maintenance plants you could possibly choose to grow in the landscape.
The bluish color of Blue Star juniper goes well with plants with golden foliage. Plant new shrubs in a shallow, broad hole that is as deep as the root ball and three times as wide.
Add some compost to the soil and replace the soil up to the base of the plant. Give the new plant a good watering. Water new plants weekly during the first growing season.
Any disease or bug-pest problems will generally occur on these shrubs only in hot, humid regions. One such problem is spider mites. If you detect spider mites on your plant in time, you can simply hose the bush down with a very strong spray. This may knock the pests off. Check your bush regularly thereafter to ensure that the spider mites do not return. Repeat the hosing-down as needed. Plant this small evergreen bush in full sun. The blue star juniper does well in a variety of soil types, so long as they are well-drained, but its natural preference is for light, sandy soil.
It does well in slightly alkaline soil. Make sure to water these dwarf evergreen shrubs properly their first year in the yard so that they can become established, then let them go. Water established plants occasionally when they look dry, or more often in extreme heat, keeping in mind this plant doesn't like overly wet conditions.
They are relatively drought-tolerant shrubs once mature. Having developed in the mountains of Asia, the blue star juniper will not do well in areas with high heat and humidity.
You will only need to fertilize blue star juniper in the late winter or early spring of its first year. Use a general fertilizer. Once established, it won't need routine fertilization.
Fertilize your plants by applying compost to the soil.Biosol Natural Organic Fertilizer: Biosol, also known as dry mycelium, is a by-product from the manufacturing process of penicillin. The dry mycelium and chitin in Biosol promotes a healthy balance of microbes, insuring the long-term plant health for your turf and plants.
Chitin is one of the key and unique components of the Biosol. This slow uniform release mimics the natural growing cycle of plants, making nutrients more readily available for root absorption. Biosol has a balanced nutrition ratio and supplies the plant with micro and macro-nutrients throughout the whole growing period.
Building the organic matter and humus allows the soil to become active, allowing the nutrients to be available for plant intake. It is the high organic material in the Biosol that improves the humus content of the soil in addition to providing quality nutrients for plants. The soil is enriched, rooting is strengthened and the growing and vitality of your turf is increased, while strengthening the plants resistance against disease.
The risk of nitrate leaching is very low because of the organic fixation of the nutrients and nitrogen, providing the ultimate use of nutrients see Nitrogen release graph. Biosol is a safe and ecological fertilizer because of the selected raw materials used during the production of the fungal biomass dry mycelium. In fact, Biosol was developed in the same way as slow release vitamins.
Nutrients are released continuously throughout the growing cycle, reducing maintenance costs associated with lesser quality fertilizers, which require numerous applications. Because of its low pH, nutrients are more readily available for plant uptake, rather than being bound in the soil.
One of the key factors of Biosol is its ability to promote a healthy balance of microbes, insuring the long-term green color and health of your turf and plants while controlling thatch. This unique blend of nutrients enables Biosol to stimulate root development, enabling plants of all kinds to fully absorb essential nutrients for longevity and maximum health.

The organic substances in Biosol promote soil health. Biosol Material Safety Data Sheet. Biosol stimulates the micro-organisms in the soil and is used as a primary and maintenance fertilizer.
Biosol will not burn vegetation when used properly. Spreading: Measure the turf area and spread proper amount as evenly as possible, walking in both directions to achieve the best coverage.
Application rates: Biosol should be applied at lbs per sq. Longer growing seasons may need a second application. Application rates may be adjusted to fit any special soil or nutrient requirements. The farm has lovely old stone walls, an historic cottage, a large barn and a fabulous two-state view of the White Mountains and the Connecticut River Valley. Owner Mike Garvan has been cultivating trees on the farms since His partner and farm manager Ben Hoyt has been overseeing farm operations for 25 years.
The trees are planted in rows and carefully nurtured throughout the years it takes to grow a 7-foot fir tree. Farm soils are tested and a fertilizer blend is mixed and applied to bring the soil to optimum levels for tree development. Trees are fertilized twice a year to produce vigorous, healthy Christmas trees with excellent color and needle retention. Every summer from the time they reach 3 feet in height, the trees are shaped sheared to correct any growing problems and to control growth so that the tree at harvest is full, dense and has a pleasing cone shape.
The trees are sheared by hand using a special knife and hand pruners. The year of harvest, the tree is sheared lightly so that the tree has a soft, natural look and plenty of branch tips to decorate with your favorite ornaments.
The weeds between the rows of trees are controlled by mowing several times a year.
